RBT Competency Assessment 2026: Initial, Renewal, Checklist & Examples

If you’re on the journey to becoming an RBT—or renewing your certification—your Competency Assessment is the most personal, hands-on, and honestly…the most nerve-wracking part of the entire process.
I’ve helped so many students through this step, and almost all of them tell me:

“Crystal, the exam wasn’t the scary part… the competency assessment was!”

So let’s fix that.
This guide will walk you through everything—the Initial Competency Assessment, the Renewal Competency Assessment, the 2025 BACB rules, the full checklist, examples, cost, timing, supervision expectations, and how to prepare without overwhelming yourself.

What Is the RBT Competency Assessment? (Simple Definition)

The RBT Competency Assessment is a skills-based evaluation where a qualified supervisor (BCBA, BCaBA, or BCBA-D) makes sure you can actually perform the tasks listed on the RBT Task List (2nd Edition).

This assessment verifies that you can:

  • take accurate measurement
  • run skill-acquisition programs
  • follow behavior intervention plans
  • collect ABC data
  • implement reinforcement correctly
  • maintain professionalism
  • document sessions properly

You’ll complete it:

  • before your RBT exam (Initial)
  • every year during renewal

Initial RBT Competency Assessment (2026 Full Guide)

When I coach students, I always describe the Initial Competency Assessment as your “first supervised flight.”
You’re not expected to be perfect—but you are expected to show the right ABA processes.

Requirements (Based on BACB 2025 Rules)

To take the Initial Assessment, you must have:

  • Completed the 40-hour RBT training
  • A qualified assessor (BCBA/BCaBA/BCBA-D)
  • A real client (or role-play in specific, limited cases)
  • Live observation (in person or synchronous online)
  • Correct documentation and signatures

How Long Does the Initial Competency Assessment Take?

Based on hundreds of students I’ve worked with, here’s the common range:

Assessment DifficultyTime Range
Fast Track2–3 hours
Average Learner3–5 hours
Complex Cases5–8 hours

Realistically, most BCBAs conduct it over multiple sessions, not in a single block.

Cost of the Initial Competency Assessment

Costs vary widely:

Provider TypeCost Range
Independent BCBA$75–$200
ABA AgenciesOften free with job offer
Online BCBA Contractors$100–$250
University or community programsFree or low-cost

Most of my students choose ABA agencies because onboarding often covers the entire assessment.

Real Examples From the Initial Competency (Examples Students Love)

Here are some real-life examples I use when preparing students:

Example 1 — Recording Frequency

Your supervisor says:
“Record every time the client taps the table.”

You must:

  • define the behavior clearly
  • count accurately
  • convert to rate if needed

Example 2 — Behavior Reduction (Role-Play)

Supervisor:
“If the client screams when denied a toy, show me extinction.”

You must:

  • withhold the reinforcer
  • remain neutral
  • continue the program
  • follow the BIP

Example 3 — Chaining

Demonstrate:

  • forward chaining hand-washing
  • or backward chaining shoe-tying

Example 4 — Prompt Fading

Supervisor expects:

  • least-to-most or most-to-least
  • correct timing
  • no over-prompting

These are the exact skills that determine if you’re ready for supervised fieldwork.

RBT Renewal Competency Assessment

Every RBT must renew every 12 months, and renewal requires a second competency assessment.

What’s Different From the Initial One?

CategoryInitialRenewal
FocusDemonstrating baseline skillsDemonstrating professional growth

Amount of SupervisionBefore certificationDuring employment
Purpose“Ready to begin?”“Maintaining standards?”

What Renewal Evaluates

  • Ethical conduct
  • Treatment integrity
  • Data accuracy
  • Professionalism
  • Implementation quality
  • Improvement since onboarding

Cost of Renewal Competency

Most agencies do this free, since you already work for them.

Private assessments cost $75–$150.

How to Prepare for Your Competency Assessment (My Student Strategy)

Here’s what I ALWAYS tell my students:

1. Know the Task List (Internal Linking)

Link this to your Task List content:

  • Measurement
  • Skill Acquisition
  • Behavior Reduction
  • Documentation

2. Practice with Real ABA Scenarios

Use your own RBT Practice Exams, especially scenario-based items.

3. Film Yourself Practicing

Almost every student who did this passed first try.

4. Review Your Agency’s BIP

RBTs fail more from not knowing the client’s plan than anything else.
